Kolsay Lakes (2 or 3 days)

Seasons: June - November
Equipment: sport shoes and clothing

Day 1. Drive to Charyn Canyon. It is commony stated that Charyn Canyon is a smaller version of the famous Grand Canyon in America, however it has a unique charm all its own. The Charyn River cuts through layers of sediment and intrusive rock, which form the Kuluktau Mountains and form the Charyn's valley. This picturesque area has very diverse geography and topography. The steep canyon slopes, columns and arches rise to heights of 150 to 300 meters. Numerous ravines form a dense and disorderly net called the "badlands". On its slopes are found fossilized remnants of fauna from the Lower Carboniferous period.

In the afternoon, transfer by car to Kolsay Lakes. Overnight in small hotel. Two-story houses accommodating up to 12 guests in 6 dbl rooms are available, as well as houses with three double rooms. Kitchens, guest rooms, freezers, and TV are available in each location.

Day 2. Morning hike along the lake to the second lake. The three Kolsay Lakes are located in Kol Say gorge between the Northern ranges of the Kungey Alatau Mountains. These lakes lie at differing heights above sea level - 1000, 2250 and 2700 m. The distance from Almaty to the first lake is 330 km. Three hours of hiking and you can enjoy a view of the second lake. The shores and slopes of the mountains that surround it is a paradise for lovers of mushroom hunting. Here, nature is absolutely wild and virgin, without any trace of civilization. The third lake - the coldest - is 6 km higher. In all of these lakes, trout may be caught. The surroundings of these lakes are wonderful for hiking and horse tours. Afternoon return to Almaty.

It is also possible to continue the hike past the third lake to Issyk Kul in Kyrgyzstan.
